Rocky Mountain News: SLOCUM, JEROLD E. Jerold "Jerry" E. Slocum, 66, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died November 5th, 2002 in a snorkeling accident at Australia's Great Barrier Reef. He is survived by his wife Kay, three married children (Kerrie, Julie, Glenn) four grandsons, one granddaughter and three brothers. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at Bethany Lutheran Church, Denver, Colorado, on Wednesday, November 13th at 11:00 AM. For details, call the Jerry Slocum Memorial Information Line at (719) 481-0119. In 1974, Jerry moved his family to Colorado, accepting a position as President of United Banks Service Company. Further work was done for United Banks Corporation as VP/EVP in the areas of Data Processing/Strategic Planning/Marketing/Finance. He also completed further education at the Aspen Institute for Humanistic Studies. Jerry established his own management consulting company, Corplan, Incorporated. In 1984, he took an extended sabbatical from his professional consulting career to lead the Bethany Lutheran Church Building Committee. Through his compassion, vision, dedication, and love, he led his team to rebuild and "resurrect" Bethany after a catastrophic fire, Jerry frequently indicated that this was the most fulfilling challenge, coupled with the most talented of teams, in his career. His passions included travel, adventure, photography, and digital movie production. An avid tennis player, wine connoisseur, accomplished violinist and skier, he loved Colorado and returned often to vacation with family/friends, A loving husband, father, and grandfather, Jerry's greatest gift and talent was his ability to connect with those around him and see the best in each person he touched. From the KLEM , radio 1410 web site: (Cedar Rapids-AP) -- A man from Cedar Rapids drowned while snorkeling with his brother off the coast of Australia. Jerry Slocum drowned Tuesday while snorkeling on an island near the Great Barrier Reef. His wife -- Kay -- says Jerry and his brother Don were on a snorkeling trip organized by a small tour operator. From the NORTH HOLLYWOOD HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI ASSOCIATION newsletter: Jerry Slocum '54 graduated from UCS and started an engineering career for NASA and the Defense Dept. He became the Director of Data Processing for the Federal Reserve Board in Washington, D.C. He lived in Colorado and Cedar Rapids where Kay (Hickman'53) has been associate Pastor for the 1st Lutheran Church. He was a man of many interests. He died in a snorkeling accident on Australia's Great Barrier Reef. His brothers Don '51 and Mel '57 survive him. |
